Entry 1: Get A Grip!
Humble Beginnings
Alexander Herrmann, Ricky Jay, and Howard Thurston, our great founding fathers, or the card throwing grip founding fathers. These three men have developed the three most famous card grips, the Herrmann Grip, the Jay Grip, and the Thurston Grip, obviously as all humble men do, they named each one after themselves.
I'm Magically A Magician
Despite knowing three, very efficient, card throwing grips, I still cannot throw at the speed of sound, although the only sound you will hear are my screams of rage, so I will have to practice. There are many other factors in play when tossing a laminated piece of paper across your room, some that were discovered by Galileo, others my modern rappers, as Chedda Da Connect would say, you should "look at the flick of the wrist".
Time To Actually Get A Grip
Despite me talking about these famous, efficient card throwing grips, I have not actually put it to use. Personalization is an essential key to card throwing, especially when three of the greatest card throwers invented their own grip that fits them, so now it is time to pick which one I will use, after some testing.
Overview
Today I managed to look at three gripping techniques, and figure out which one works best for me, I had planned to get a technique by the 27th of February, but it seems I have done it early. Despite that, I do not think my timeline will change due to the fact that the last few goals are much more difficult than the first two. I do think that I may become consist at the Thurston Grip before my scheduled time, but after that I will probably be back on schedule. If you enjoyed listening to me trying to reference rappers, then bookmark this blog, and expect updates!
I find it cool that you filmed yourself throwing the card. It really adds to the blog, as we can see how you throw a card.
ReplyDeleteIt's fascinating that such a niche hobby (card thrower) can have such complex techniques and a long history.
You do a great job establishing a casual, humorous tone. I actually chuckled a little bit when I read "...obviously as all humble men do, they named each one after themselves."

It's also pretty cool that there are multiple different grips. I never knew that there was real study and expertise involved in throwing cards.
It's Brendan, btw. I don't have my real name attached to my gmail.
DeleteLove the topic! This post was simplistic and really easy to follow. The visuals were an awesome touch and the video was pretty cool. Maybe one day card throwing can be a sport and you could star in it. If it's not a sport, I guess you can make it one and win by default.
ReplyDeleteCard throwing seems so cool, and it's impressive that you've already learned what grip you would like to use. The humor used made this blog all the much better, and kept it at a light tone. I look forward to seeing what your end goal is.
